The First 6 Weeks with Invisalign: What to Expect
Invisalign has been a trusted orthodontic option for patients for many years. The system uses clear plastic trays, known as aligners to carefully straighten teeth and eliminate crowding and misalignment issues. You will find that Invisalign is easier to wear than traditional braces, and results are often achieved quicker than anything else you might have tried in the past. This is why a lot of patients have chosen to utilize Invisalign and are finding their results to be far superior than anything they could have ever imagined in the past.
What to Expect in the First 6 Weeks
During the first six weeks of Invisalign, you can expect to come in for a consultation, exam, x-rays and impressions. The impressions are going to be used to make your first set of Invisalign aligners. You will be given instruction on how to wear these aligners, but most patients will need to wear their Invisalign for about 22 hours every day. You can expect to have some soreness and tenderness during treatment. This is normal as the teeth begin to shift into place. You may find that over-the-counter pain medication is helpful in terms of relieving this pain and eliminating the soreness. After about six weeks, you can expect another appointment to have your second set of Invisalign aligners made. You will go through more than a dozen aligners throughout the course of treatment.
When it comes to long-term treatment, you will need to come into the office once every month to six weeks to have new aligners made or to have an exam done to determine if aligners are needed. Once treatment is finished, you will need to wear a retainer in order to maintain your results. Invisalign treatment can take anywhere from a few months to about two years to complete fully, and this is completely independent to the patient having it done. Invisalign is ideal for teens and adults alike, and can be useful for patients who have mild to moderate orthodontic problems.
There are many benefits to choosing Invisalign, and you can expect quick and drastic results in a short period of time. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is clear and can be beneficial for those who want to benefit from orthodontic treatment but who are not yet ready to wear metal brackets and wires in order to achieve these results.
